Today the town retains many of the legacies of the British Government. Darjeeling was given to the East India Company by the King of Sikkim to protect them from the king of Nepal. Darjeeling town is centered round the Mall and is the hill station of West Bengal with exotic view of the Himalayan peaks specially Mount Everest, Mount Makalu, Mount Lhotse and Mount Kanchendzonga. Popularly known as the queen of hill stations and is situated at a distance of approximately 90 kilometers from Siliguri. Situated at a height of nearly 2134 meters / 7000 feet and is a destination for the visitors who want to avoid the sweltering heat of the summer. It is one well known destination due to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park and for the clear view of the Himalayan range. This famous narrow gauge steam railway plies its way from Siliguri in the plains below up to Ghoom and Darjeeling in the hills. Several movies have been shot in this world heritage train and it can now be chartered for film, advertisement and other commercial shooting. It conjures visions of serenity and of vibrant green hills steeped in splendor.
